Working During Pregnancy

Once you have found out you are pregnant and you are still at work, it is time for you to make the decision to stay or leave. Most women continue working in their field of work until it is unsafe for the baby. But how do you know when it is safe? And what kind of work can you do whilst pregnant?

Around 78% of women continue to work until near the end of their pregnancy. You should always ask your GP about working whilst pregnant. They will take into consideration the type of work you do, your general health and how well the pregnancy is going. Depending on the type of job, you should be able to work until the labour starts.

If you work only a few hours, you will be able to work longer than those who work full time. If you have a physical labour job the GP will probably recommend you stop work after a few months to ensure the baby’s safety. Risky jobs that involve heavy lifting, climbing and standing for long periods of time will not be suitable for you to continue work. These labour jobs will be harder for you to work, as you will have extra weight and stress on your body that you wouldn’t normally have.
